De Jongh-Francis 2010 Response to Mapp Allegations: "So Sad"

Mapp's Baseless Assertions Draw into Question the Election
of All Public Officials, Says Campaign Chairman

“So sad, and yet so familiar,” is how de Jongh-Francis 2010 Territorial Chairman Robert O’Connor, Jr. responded to published reports that Ken Mapp would not concede the gubernatorial election. In Mapp’s own words, “we don’t know what these numbers mean.”

“Well Ken, let me tell you, we know what the numbers mean. They mean that the people of the Virgin Islands have resoundingly rejected you once again and by a wide margin. The people have spoken clearly and for you to seek to undermine the integrity of our voting system through baseless accusations is not just being a sore loser, it is corrosive to our fundamental democratic process,” O’Connor said.

“I know that Mr. Mapp feels his ‘advanced research and polling’ was all the evidence he needed to know he was going to win this election, but I would remind him and Dr. Sekou that voters, not pollsters, choose our elected officials. Mapp may feel actual elections are inconvenient, but I know Virgin Islanders think differently,” O’Connor added.

O’Connor noted that this reaction from Ken Mapp is completely consistent with past behavior by Mapp going all the way back to the time when he lied to try to get and keep a seat in the Legislature after he failed to meet the legal requirements. “It is always about Ken Mapp and we’ve seen once again, there is little he will not do to try to get and keep power,” O’Connor continued. “But Ken Mapp is now questioning the election of all the persons elected in the 2010 General Election, as well as questioning the integrity of our elections system, the men and women who are elected to the Boards of Elections as well as the Supervisor and his staff. Ken Mapp’s baseless allegations are simply reprehensible,” he added.

O’Connor said, “Our people voted for the future and it is time to get back to work building that future. John de Jongh and Greg Francis invite everyone to come together with us and work together with us to build that future – Together For Tomorrow!”
